SHE has driven thousands of miles over 45 years helping the sick, elderly and vulnerable to get vital medical treatment.

Now South Central Ambulance Service has honoured mother-of-two Milly Stokes for her outstanding service as a voluntary ambulance car driver and hopes that her story will inspire many more people to follow her example.

From chauffeuring a 103-year-old woman to her hospital appointments, to making sure a five-year-old girl gets to and from her chemotherapy sessions, Milly from Sholing has been there for whoever needs a lift.

She said: “Volunteering as an ambulance car driver gives me a reason to go out so I’m not driving aimlessly but going somewhere with a purpose and helping someone into the bargain.”
