Thief steals £5k from safe at the Rockstone pub in Southampton and leaves taps running
10:30am Tuesday 5th February 2013 in News
CAUGHT on camera – this is the moment a burglar entered a popular Southampton pub and stole around £5,000 from a safe.
He was filmed walking into The Rockstone in Onslow Road before wandering into the private area upstairs and taking the cash from an open safe.
Then he casually strolled out of the pub leaving the taps on behind him.
It was only when water started dripping from the ceiling of the bar downstairs that staff realised something was wrong.
Police are investigating the theft and want people to help identify the man in the pictures.
The incident happened just before 9pm on Sunday.
Security cameras captured the man walking into the pub talking on his telephone. He sat down near the end of the bar waiting for his opportunity to pounce.
After watching bar staff and customers he walked behind the bar and upstairs to private living quarters, where the residents were at the time.
He found the safe and removed a tub containing what it thought to be up to £5,000.
Having removed the cash the man put the tub in a sink, turned on the taps and returned to the bar, once again on his phone for a while, before casually leaving the pub.
Water pouring over the top of the sink and dripping into the rooms below caused minor damage.
Max Greenwood, landlord of the pub, whose motto is Be Excellent To Each Other, said: “I’m not angry, I’m disappointed.”
The male suspect is described as black with short, possibly shaved, dark hair.
He is more than 6ft, aged between 20 and 30 and muscular.
He wore a beige jacket, dark jeans and white trainers.
Anyone who recognises the man in the footage should contact Shirley CID on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.

Leaving the taps on is the part which annoys me most ! Destructive idiocy not just greed thievery.

It is just a matter of time before his collar is felt and he experiences deja vu when he steps into court to plead guilty to a raft of criminal charges. He will know it and will be debating whether to hand himself in or await the knock on the door.
I hope the Judge, and it will be a Judge given the seriousness and the crook's almost certain lengthy criminal history, directs him to make reparations from his benefits upon his release.
What are the odds that this low life is in public housing and receiving all possible benefits from the very society he seeks to abuse?

This crook is done and dusted. Obviously a recidivist offender who will be well known to both Police and Prison authorities and probably Social Services.

is he on the phone in that picture ? video time stamp+cell phone records = additional link to the crime if the police will follow up that part of the evidence.

People like this will come into your house while you are in, nick all your stuff and be away before you notice.
Its all about them having the confidence to do it and being prepared to get lairy if confronted.
Hopefully this chap gets caught and gets a decent sentence.

Good luck to Max and Aimee getting justice on this! I know all too badly what it's like having a crime committed in your pub.

Am I the only one here wondering what the hell the point is of having CCTV at all if that's the best picture you're going to get? We're now in an age where HD CCTV camer heads can be purchased for less than 50 quid, if these idiots would've spent just a tiny bit of that 5 grand on a better security system we wouldn't be wasting our time reading this story!!
There is a VIDEO further down the article of the thief... by watching that you can clearly see it is actually fairly high quality.
The picture is a screen grab of a moving object (his face) which has also been zoomed in on, therefore producing a not amazingly clear image.
Putting in HD cameras would require terabytes of storage a day. If the govenrment can't afford that - then how can a freehold pub?
Read the article and watch the video before spouting off ill advised and smart arse comments.
