OBJECTORS to a housing development in a Hampshire village showed disturbing car crash images at a planning meeting in a desperate bid to have the plans thrown out.

But the development in Denmead will go ahead despite objections from the parish council, Winchester city councillor Kirk Phillips and several residents.

Developers Town an County applied for permission to demolish a house – Evergreen – in Forest Road to make way for a mix of houses and one and two-bedroom flats.

Denmead ward member, Cllr Phillips told the planning committee: “I implore you – do not approve this development,”

branding planned access and parking “inadequate and dangerous”.

The committee was shown photos showing crashes in Forest Road where a fatality occurred in 2000.

But highways officers said they were satisfied with provision for traffic.

The proposals split the planning committee.

Cllr Therese Evans said: “The stark reality for villages like Denmead is that you either allow development like this or you start building on greenfield sites.”

Cllr Barry Lipscomb said: “It is contrary to policy in that it does not respond positively to the character of the local environment.”
