Police are today questioning a number of people after a large fight broke out at a party advertised on the Internet.

Officers were called to an address in Ryde on the Isle of Wight following reports of the party.

Police escorted a large group away from the address and onto local buses.

But further violence broke out on the buses and more officers were drafted into Newport .

Eight people were arrested, aged between 14 and 24.

Three of the eight were arrested for assaulting a police officer.

The officer was not seriously injured and remained on duty.

Sergeant Michael Hughes from Newport Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “This large scale disorder was the result of a party being advertised on social media. It got out of hand and police had to be called in.

“We then had to use significant resources to deal robustly with further issues in Newport.

“I’d like to reassure the public that we will also be deploying extra patrols this evening. We will not tolerate any repeat of this behaviour.”
