Naked Rambler due back in court again

Daily Echo: Nake Rambler due back in court again Nake Rambler due back in court again

Hampshire's naked rambler has found himself facing court once again after his lack of clothes sparked numerous calls to police.

Stephen Gough  was arrested in Shawford Road, Shawford, on Friday afternoon following calls from members of the public who reported seeing a man walking naked in the area.

The 53-year-old, of Chamberlayne Road, Eastleigh, was charged with a public order offence and is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on March 14.

Gough only walked free from court in Oxford earlier this month after charges of outraging public decency against him were dropped.

He was walking naked from the Scottish border to his mother’s home in Eastleigh when he was arrested in Carterton, West Oxfordshire, on December 4, last year.

This guy is obviously not going to change and is either mentally ill, or extremely passionate about nakedness to the point where nothing or no-one will persuade him to wear clothing. I dread to think how much public funds are wasted each time he is hauled before the courts. Either assess him as mentally ill and detain him in a secure unit for his own safety or leave him be to live his life the way that he feels he should be. He is not a danger to the public. Keep the justice system for criminals and stop wasting money on someone who chooses to be different. I feel extremely sorry for his children though, as constantly having their parent in the press will be very hard for them.

You say he's not mentally ill, but I don't know any sane people who would walk around naked in these temperatures if they had a choice to be clothed!! And, whatever way you look at it, it isn't right for the rest of society to have to tolerate his nakedness in public! Would you want your children bumping into him????!! He may be a perfectly harmless, decent man; but this isn't a decent way to behave and he is well aware of that. It is right that he is challenged by the law courts.

I guess it is down to the beholder, if what they see is deemed offensive then they have a right to complain and trigger a prosecution. Perhaps if he was tried in Court with a completely naked judge and jury of the ugliest naturists in the country he might have second thoughts!

Good on him! It can never really be offensive to be as we were born!

Perhaps to stopping wasting public funds in pointless prosecutions, perhaps he might agree to some ground rules - i.e. stay out of towns etc.

As for children seeing a grown man naked, unless there is and sexual behavious going on (and there have never been any suggestion that this is the case with this chap) I dont really see what harm it could possibly do to see how a human being looks without their clothes on - a trip to Bournemouth beach on a summers day reveals 99% female nakedness the only other 1% being covered by a small piece of fabric!

Do we not rely on the courts to bring Justice. Here is a man who repeat offends in more than one way yet the Courts do absolutley nothing. The Courts should be charged with wasting police time in not actually dealing with the situation. There is a time and a place for Mr GOUGH to make his views known. In front of children and families is not one of them.

My worry is that if I see him naked in front of my daughter my actions could result in me appearing before a judge. Hopefully I would get a sensible jury to decide ny fate.

.. er?? He's actually been in prison for most of the past 5 or so years. Is that not down to the courts then?
