A SOUTHAMPTON school was plunged into darkness as part of the World Wildlife (WWF) Federation’s Earth Hour – and also got schools across the city to do the same.

Fairisle Junior School in Lordshill, laid down a challenge for all the city’s schools to join them and 27 other schools also turned the power off as part of Earth Hour.

For each school that took part, Fairisle School has pledged to plant a tree in the school grounds.

To mark the occasion during Earth Hour, there was a concert and various activities. The school also set pupils a task to take photographs of how they spend their time without lights.

Head teacher of Fairisle Junior School, Peter Howard, said: “We are proud to take part in WWF’s Earth Hour. Everyone can make a difference in saving our planet and children have a key role to play.”

Fairisle’s after-school green team are pictured turning off the school’s laptops for Earth Hour.
