HAMPSHIRE police have pledged to continue to support the Southampton community where a young man was shot dead.

High visibility patrols are set to continue through the streets of St Mary's following the killing of 23-year-old Jamal Jones on Saturday.

While detectives from the Hampshire Major Investigation Team (HMIT) manage the investigation into the shooting, local Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) officers are working with community groups and residents to address any community concerns and support the investigation.

Chief Inspector Craig Dibdin said: "Since Saturday we have had extra officers in the area to assist with the HMIT investigation and to support and reassure the community through what we realise is a worrying time for them.

"No-one expects this kind of incident to happen in their community and we understand that it has left many people with unanswered questions and that people may have been left unsettled by this act of violence.

"My officers are working closely with colleagues in HMIT to conduct a thorough investigation and bring whoever did this to justice. It is a complex and fast-moving investigation and I would like to thank the public for their support of us so far.

"We will be maintaining an active presence in the area for as long as we need to in order to return the area to normality as soon as we can. If anyone has any concerns about their safety or policing in this community they can either talk to the officers out there on the streets or contact them via our website at www.hampshire.police.uk or by calling 101."

Four suspects arrested in connection with the shooting were continuing to be questioned on suspicion of murder.

A 21-year-old woman was bailed pending further inquiries.
