The Environment Agency has teamed up with Hyde900 to place special plaques by the Nuns’ Stream in Hyde.
Lawrence Talks, fisheries specialist for the Environment Agency and Winchester resident, carried out the work last week with the help of local volunteers Gillian Gutteridge and Penny Stewart.
Mr Talks said: “This innovative project is one of the first of its kind in the UK and will help to protect the Nuns’ Stream from pollution.
“Its aim is to make people aware that polluting substances such as oil and building waste should not be disposed of down road drains that flow into the river. Over the last ten years the Environment Agency has received ten reported pollution incidents on the Nuns’ Stream. Such incidents can kill fish and damage wildlife.”
Steve Marper, Hyde900 chairman, added: “As a community group dedicated to celebrating the history and area of Hyde in Winchester, we feel passionately about the Nuns’ Stream and are really pleased to be part of this initiative.”
