A TEAM of six pupils at Awbridge Primary School near Romsey are hoping to become Hampshire’s top junior road safety champions.

Awbridge is one of eight schools across the county battling to be crowned Champion of Champions and its road safety team, Harriet Alexander, Tess Hanson, Maisy Rossdale, Bryony Legg, Faith Ellison and Maisie Sherin will find out next Wednesday whether they have won the competition run by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The children had to submit work covering all aspects of road safety to the education authority officials and they chose the best eight schools that are in the finals.

Awbridge School’s leaning support assistant Angela Bungay said: “The Awbridge team has worked very hard to get to this stage and we are very proud of them. They did workshops on road safety and they taught other pupils what they learnt. They are currently in the process of setting up a road safety page on the school’s website.”

At Wednesday’s finals at Eastleigh Fire Station the eight schools will be given various tasks involving road safety and the best team will win the title.

Station manager Clyde Evans, Hampshire Fire and Rescue’s lead for road safety said: “The event has been organised as a celebration of the fantastic work that junior road safety officers are doing to promote road safety to their peers at school and at home. We wanted to be able to give them a day to share their thoughts and learn more about road safety, in a fun environment, so that they can go back to their schools, armed with more information to tell their friends.”

Awbridge will be up against teams from St Monica Junior School in Southampton, Thornhill Primary, Southampton, South Wonston Primary near Winchester, Lymington Juinor, Alverstoke Junior at Gosport, Northern Parade Junior in Portsmouth and Wimborne Junior in Portsmouth.
