A HAMPSHIRE city will host its biggest cycling race for 20 years tomorrow.

The race through Winchester city centre will see nearly 200 cyclists from all over the country descend upon the narrow streets from as far afield as Jersey and Wales. Thirty competitors are expected to take part in the women’s race.

Eighty-five juniors and 80 racers across both men’s categories are also anticipated.

The finish line is by the Buttercross monument.

Crispin Quail, secretary of Winchester-based cycling club Velo Club Venta, said: “We’re pleased it’s back in Winchester and to see so many participating.”

The races are part of Winchester Cyclefest: Winchester Criterium and Family Cycle Day, which runs from midday to 8pm.

It will see activities and stalls in The Broadway with youth races starting at 4pm and elite races from 7pm.

Attractions include a cycle stunt display team, a British Cycling skills workshop for all the family, a toddler bikes area, professional bike repairs, a vintage cycle display and static bike racing to music.

However, with Winchester City Council expecting between 2-4,000 spectators, central car parks will be closed and people are encouraged to use the park and ride.

Chris Peach, sports development manager at the city council, said: “We’ve taken every precaution to minimise disruption and any other problems. I’d love to be up there, I’m a bit of a racer myself but work comes first.”

There is more support from sponsors this year too, with the likes of Hendy Ford, the Business Improvement District (BID) and bike-fitters Vankru providing £500 for the women’s race prize money.
