A VINTAGE seaplane paid Southampton a visit as part of a five-day, round-thecountry flight.

The 70-year-old Catalina called Miss Pick Up flew over the city as part of a flight to commemorate the 100th anniversary of a circuit-of-Britain seaplane race.

The plane, which is the country’s oldest airworthy amphibian plane, also flew low across Southampton Water in a tribute to former city mayor Michael Andrews and Eastleigh man Peter Shave.

They were killed in 1998 when a Catalina seaplane they were travelling in crashed and sank in Southampton Water.

It had been carrying 18 passengers on a VIP trip organised by the city council.

Miss Pick Up was flown as part of Project Hawker, which commemorated the 1913 race which saw aviation pioneers Harry Hawker and Harry Kauper fly around the UK’s coastline in a Sopwith waterplane.
