A ROCKING bunch of elderly care home residents are ready to donate their extensive record collection to help a crime-hit charity.

People living at Alun Chun House, in Netley Abbey, want to hand over around 2,000 LPs to Oxfam Music Southampton to bring the East Street store back to its feet.

The popular shop has launched a Daily Echo-backed campaign urging members of the public to donate unwanted vinyl, CDs, music DVDs, and memorabilia, after it lost thousands of pounds worth of stock in an overnight break-in earlier this month.

Thieves fled with almost £6,000 of stock and left a trail of destruction in an incident police and staff branded as “callous and disgusting”.

The shop was previously targeted by burglars in 2011, when almost 3,000 CDs, a computer, and a collection tin were taken.

This latest drive for old material has been a success with readers getting in touch in their droves.

Vicky Hopkins, scheme manager at the care home, said one of its residents read the campaign launch article in the Daily Echo and suggested donating the home’s extensive collection.

The eclectic collection, which ranges from rock to jazz to Christmas songs, has been kept in boxes for a number of years.

She said: “There was a male resident who had the main collection and we have just added to it over the years.

“We really wanted someone to come and collect them before this appeal came to light.

“It’s something we like to do. We are a community.

We do a lot of fundraisers and we would like to see the records go to charity rather than in the bin.

“I asked a few residents if we should donate them to Oxfam and they agreed with it.

“We don’t use them and they wanted Oxfam to have them for a worthwhile cause
