NEARLY 700 women and girls took part in the second all-female charity cycling event in the New Forest yesterday.

Riders pedalled along three courses around the forest ranging from 20 to 80 kilometres, starting and finishing at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu.

All proceeds will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

One of the organisers, Jessie Phippen, said: “We are really pleased; we have had a lot of enthusiastic riders and a lot of people riding for charity in big groups. We have even had a mother and daughter on a tandem.

“The event is growing and I think it is going to continue to grow.”

Daily Echo:

The event, which is backed by Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton, was not marred by the vandals who have been targeting the commercial Wiggle mass cycling events this summer when tacks and mud were spread on roads.

Ms Phippen said: “We were worried about it but we made sure we had lots of stewards as a precaution and extra signage.”
