DORSET beat Hampshire in the battle of the pumpkins as a new British record was set.

Mark Baggs, 30, from Wareham, beat Lymington twins Ian and Stuart Paton, 52, into second place at Saturday’s Jubilee Sailing Trust Pumpkin Festival with a monster fruit weighing 1,520lb.

But the brothers vowed to be back again next year to try and reclaim their title.

Crowds packed the annual event at the Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley to see the 15 entries weighed, the heaviest with the aid of a tractor.

Other attractions included live bands, seasonal competitions, stalls and refreshments.

Daily Echo:

There was also a scarecrow alley including entries from pupils at Netley Abbey Infants School and Star Wars-inspired figures.

Sonja Davison, from the Jubilee Sailing Trust, said better weather than last year had helped bring in the crowds.

“There were big hailstones last year. We have actually got sunshine. All our stallholders have turned up and so have the crowds.

“The quality of the scarecrows was tip top.”
