IT is the epic challenge usually tackled by walkers, runners, or cyclists.

But these determined fundraisers will travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats using only public transport.

Jeremy Howat, who is from Southampton, and work colleague Michael Meilton will embark on the journey using local bus services to raise £20,000.

The money will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and help make Jeremy’s daughter’s dream come true.

Ten-year-old Cariad has spinal muscular atrophy and is unable to sit unassisted and without the aid of ventilation.

The pair are stepping up to the plate to raise the cash to send Cariad and her parents to Disney World for a once in a lifetime trip.

The charity has already helped Cariad meet her favourite actress, Chelsee Healey, star of BBC drama Waterloo Road. The pair met backstage at a Strictly Come Dancing Live show in Cardiff last year.

Jeremy and Michael’s challenge was due to begin today and the pair are scheduled to reach Southampton tomorrow before catching the Wilts & Dorset line bus to Winchester. They hope to reach John O’Groats in around a week.

Their challenge has been supported by First Group and Go-Ahead, which have donated free bus passes, Ipswich buses, and Omnibus, which has given Michael and Jeremy time off work and will cover their accommodation costs, as well as donating £1,000.

Jeremy said: “Cariad is ten years old. She goes to school, watches too much television and loves shopping.

“Getting her out of her bed on a weekend is a nightmare and getting her to bed on time on a school night is a song and dance.

“However, when she was born we were told that she wouldn’t live to do any of this. Cariad has spinal muscular atrophy and through her grit, determination and our philosophy of normality she has defied the odds.

“Cariad is not unique in being a determined, brave and very clever child. Our concern is not just for Cariad, but also for others.

“We are doing everything we can to raise money to make Cariad’s dream come true as well as raise money for a charity who aims to make all disabled and disadvantaged kids get the same chance.”
