A RISING Southampton music star is doing his bit for a worthwhile cause.

Singer songwriter Sean McGowan, who grew up in Southampton, will perform in front of an intimate crowd for an in-store benefit gig at Oxfam Music Southampton on Saturday.

The acoustic punk artiste got in touch with store manager Rob Milner after learning the East Street shop was raided by callous thieves and lost thousands of pounds-worth of stock as a result.

He hopes the unplugged gig starting at 5pm will help raise donations for the crime-hit store.

The intimate performance is limited to 30 lucky wristband holders – who will be able to get entry to the gig by donating a record or CD.

It follows a successful Daily Echo-backed campaign urging the community to donate their unwanted LPs and music memorabilia to boost its depleted stock.

Thousands of records have since been donated and it even received celebrity backing, with local heroes Craig David, Alt-J and Frank Turner personally donating copies of their music.

Sean, who has supported acts such as Frank Turner and Shed Seven, has appeared at festivals up and down the country, including Glastonbury and Bestival.

He told the Daily Echo he was “gutted” when he heard the popular record shop was burgled.

He said: “I got in touch with Rob and said I was happy to help out in any way I could. If I had more money I would be there more often. It’s a place I have a lot of respect for, especially the staff for what they do.”

Sean has been busy working on new material and will be performing a selection of new tracks.

He added: “Things are starting to take the next step for me now.”

Wristbands will be available by visiting Oxfam Music Southamp-ton tomorrow or Saturday by donating a record or CD. The wristbands will be issued on a first come, first served basis.
