PEOPLE living in a Southampton community have told of their shock after two teenage girls were brutally attacked in a skate park.
As reported, the girls - aged 15 and 16 - suffered face and head injuries in a serious assault in Hinkler Park, Thornhill, last night (Friday).
They are being treated for their injuries in Southampton General Hospital.
Residents in the Thornhill community have been taking to social networking sites to tell of their shock.
One user said: “I hope all girls involved have a speedy recovery. My love goes out to her parents.”
Another Thornhill resident, who did not want to be named, told the Daily Echo: “I didn't hear anything but someone said what happened. You do not expect these things to happen to kids.”
Officers say the girls, who are both from Southampton, were in a communal area of a block of flats in Chettle Road, Bitterne, earlier in the evening when a man spoke to them on the stairs, and there was an exchange of words.
They went to the skate park where they saw the same man. There was an altercation and the girls were seriously assaulted.
This morning police cars were seen driving around roads in the area. A police cordon had been set up after the attack but was later removed.
An 18-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody.
