THE funeral service for Sir John Tavener is to be held at Winchester Cathedral.

Sir John, one of the most successful British composers of his generation, died at home on Tuesday, aged 69.

Known for his religious works, he was twice nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, and won a Grammy in 2002 for best classical contemporary composition.

He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Winchester in 2007.

The funeral service will take place at Winchester Cathedral on Thursday, November 28, at 11am.
