IT is the image with impact that police in Hampshire hope will help them in their annual battle against the Christmas drink-drivers.

Yes, the photograph of the twisted and mangled metal from a family’s Subaru Justy in the aftermath of a crash with a driver high on drink and drugs is definitely shocking.

But it is the smiling picture of the schoolgirl killed in that accident that should hammer home the message to anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

Little Evey Staley was just ten when she died in the crash near her home, and the driver who caused it has been jailed for ten years.

Her grieving family hope that their awful story will help prevent any others from suffering like they have. It is an incredibly brave gesture just over a year after the death of their beloved daughter, and is an act that not only deserves our admiration but also the decency of any self-respecting driver to heed the family’s warning and not get behind the wheel of a car after drinking.

Already, just ten days into the campaign, almost 60 motorists in the county have been arrested for drink-driving.

The campaign is called Is It Worth the Risk?

Just look at the picture of little Evey, the car she was travelling in, and listen to her family’s horrific story, and there is only ever one answer.
