A WOMAN was left shaken after she was robbed of her handbag containing a substantial amount of cash.

Detectives in Bitterne are seeking witnesses after the 52-year-old was mugged in Gilpin Close, near Hinkler Green.

She parked her car and was approached by a man who asked her the time before grabbing her handbag.

He fled with the bag across Hinkler Green and was last seen running towards Ellis Road.

The suspect, who wore dark clothing, is described as white, in his 20s and around 5ft 6in with a fair complexion and stubble.

PC Andy Lucas said: “This was a cowardly attack on a vulnerable woman, and we are keen to hear from anyone who has information about this crime.

“We especially want to hear from anyone who saw a man of the robber’s description around the time of the incident. He may have been carrying a brown leather ladies’ handbag while running away from Hinkler Green in the area of Ellis and Chettle Roads.”

A 32-year-old Southampton man was arrested on suspicion of robbery, but released with no further action.

Anyone with information about the mugging on December 20 should contact PC Lucas at Bitterne CID on 101.
