FLOODING problems in Romsey during recent weeks was taken to the top yesterday when MP Caroline Nokes raised the matter in Parliament.
The MP for Romsey and Southampton North highlighted the potential impact new development can place on areas with insufficient drainage capacity in a discussion with Secretary of State for Environment Owen Paterson.
Ms Nokes sought assurance that the relevant Government departments were working together to ensure any future developments didn’t compromise the current drainage systems.
She made mention in particular of green field development putting pressure on drainage dating as far back as the 19th century.
Ms Nokes has been visiting the scenes of flooding in her constituency and speaking with residents about the problems in Romsey, which she says are caused by complex issues – including the pumping station at Sadler’s Mill, excess surface water run-off and the possible impact of recent developments in the town.
