Pony stops traffic on A31 - day after horse causes fatal crash

Daily Echo: The A31 from the air The A31 from the air

A PONY was loose on a major road this morning, less than a day after a motorcyclist died in a collision with a horse on the same carriageway.

The animal was on the road at the Minstead turning on the A31, but was ushered back into the New Forest shortly after 12pm today.

Last night, a motorcyclist died following a crash on the same road after horse escaped on to the road.

The incident led to the road being shut for a number of hours, with hundreds of motorists stranded.

Today's incident resulted in the road being closed for a short time, but traffic was flowing once again by 12.15pm.

Don't people realise how important it is for one policeman to stroll around with a tape measure while several of his colleagues stand around looking on? These things can't be hurried you know.

If another horse was on the A31 today that can only mean one of two things. 1) A gate has been left open or 2) there is a broken fence. Hopefully someone has thought about checking all fences and gates that separate the busy A31 from the forest.
