Angry motorists confront car dealer who closed down suddenly

Daily Echo: Angry motorists confront car dealer Angry motorists confront car dealer

A CAR trader that closed down suddenly leaving angry customers demanding refunds has been tracked down to another site having opened under a new name.

After an investigation by the Daily Echo, angry customers yesterday confronted staff at Fort Wallington Car Sales about their faulty vehicles and bounced refund cheques.

Daily Echo:

With Daily Echo journalists on hand, they wrested a promise from owner Stan Rudgley (above right) that monies would be repaid.

The dramatic scenes came as trading standards officers investigate dozens of complaints about the firm.

Woolston Car Supermarket in Southampton shut suddenly last week without contacting customers or providing a forwarding address.

The company had been inundated with complaints by customers attempting to claim back hundreds of pounds in compensation. One motorist even recorded the confrontation with the firm’s management where threats can be heard being made to him.

Eventually complainants were given refund cheques, but these bounced.

And when customers returned to the showroom they discovered the company had vanished along with some of their cars left for repairs.

Daily Echo:

When the Daily Echo visited the site in Hazel Road in Woolston it was deserted with complaint letters strewn around outside.

The company had in fact moved 12 miles away to set up shop in Fareham under the new name of Fort Wallington Car Sales.

Yesterday, when confronted by angry customers, owner Mr Rudgley blamed problems on colleagues who, he said, no longer worked with him.

The Daily Echo can reveal that Richard David John Burbage who was connected with Woolston Car Supermarket owes more than eleven million Australian dollars to hundreds of people after his online dealership collapsed Down Under.

Daily Echo:

The 40-year-old (above) jetted back to his native UK after the demise of his firm, We Buy Any Car, which copied the name of the successful British online car seller but has no connection to that firm.

Mr Burbage has since been banned from being a director in Australia for ten years and hundreds of people are eager to speak to him about the money they are owed.

This newspaper has linked Mr Burbage to Woolston Car Supermarket and other companies located on the same site.

Footage obtained by the Daily Echo clearly shows Mr Burbage behind a desk next to the man officially registered as director Stan Rudgley. Both are shown shouting and threatening a customer wanting a refund.

Yesterday Mr Rudgley admitted there had been problems with his previous dealership but said he hoped to start again at his site in Fareham.

He said: “I am trying to run my business straight and not how it was run in Woolston by managers and sales staff.

“I’m now committed here to running things one hundred per cent straight down the line.”

He also claimed to have “severed ties” last week with Mr Burbage when Woolston Car Supermarket closed after falling out with him but declined to elaborate.

Daily Echo:

In a bizarre scene, one furious customer, 24-year-old Mike Wiley (above), demanded the return of his part-exchanged Volvo, only to be told by Mr Rudgley it was worth only £298 at auction.

But Mr Wiley then pointed out that his Volvo was in fact there for sale in the showroom for £1,695. Mr Rudgley promised to return the vehicle to him the next day after it had been valeted.

Another customer was promised a full refund after telling how the car he had bought for his heavily-pregnant wife had been found to have a fault which could cause the bonnet to fly up when being driven at just 30mph.

A courtesy car given to the expectant mum was also in such a bad state she was pulled over by the police.

Mr Rudgley vowed to pay back money owed by the end of next week, claiming he did not have enough money in his bank at present.

A spokesman for Southampton City Council Trading Standards office confirmed they were investigating more than 20 complaints against Woolston Car Supermarkets.

The Daily Echo attempted to speak to Mr Burbage but were unable to contact him. No one was at home at an address given by Mr Burbage during a recent court hearing for a driving offence and a neighbour told the paper she did not believe Mr Burbage lived there at present.

His former colleague Mr Rudgley was unable to assist with contact details.

the directors/owners should be responsible for the company no matter if it's a ltd company or not.
if you don't get your money go to the high court & get the enforcement officers on the case then hope they the owners don't do the above

Is a very good point. Autotrader online needs some kind of customer feedback rating similar to ebay ect... We were looking up Woolston car supermarket on their app a few weeks back and there's nothing to suggest they're dodgy.

For all those affected and want to stop them from continuing to do this you could always email scam@autotrader.co.u

Was sold a Ford Focus Auto Estate from Stan Rudgley. Car was spotless when I looked round. He put on a good kind face. 1 month later the gearbox had a fault. I returned it to him and he apparently had it looked at (although after seeing this I doubt it) said he fixed it, problem returned next day. I returned the car and his site had closed, all cars gone and he disappeared off the face of the earth...until now. Thank you Daily Echo for warning others of this con man!

I also bought a car from Stan Rudgley back in July last year a green Renault Megan, after 3 days I asked him to have the car looked at and he told me to take I to their garage they use in northam, Radcliffe garage. I did this every weekend for weeks and some times the garage would have my car from Saturday to Wednesday, may I add this is the same garage the did the MOT in the first place and in my paper work it failed and passed on the same day at the same time literally same minute!!! I contacted VOSA about this to...In the end I asked for my money back and was told no, that Stan's boss aka Dave ( Richard Burbage) would get the car fixed, I have paper work from were I constantly wrote to them asking for repair or refund and not once did they respond, I still have the car which may I add has had to have a lot of work done on it, as they then refused to do the work once the 3 months warranty was up ( which they held out for) just some of the work Radcliffe did while they had my car was the engine mounts , one engine mount holding engine in place and this was cracked, the exhaust had a split going thru it, the handbrake slipped constantly and then stopped working and sat in my drive for 4 weeks before they fixed it, lights on dashboard constantly on draining battery, went another 6 weeks with no car as it sat in driveway dead, power went and couldn't open the car a it has a key card to open no power no locks to open!! Passenger side door lock was broke we only found this out when car died !! I complained to trading standards and was told I write letter after letter but nothing came to it then they disappeared!!! So does this mean I'm entitled to a refund now on my car is their some one I can contact to get help with this as car is still faulty!!! Please help and let's hope his new business doesn't stay open either as they are rip offs,

I BROUGHT A FORD FOCUS FROM THEM JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS AFTER SEEING IT ADVERTISED ON AUTOTRADER, went to view it after speaking with them on the phone and after travelling there they said it hadn't come in from the prep garage yet and to come back to tomorrow and it was mine if I wanted it, I came back the next day with my ford ka to part exchange it as they said they would do that, I waited hours for the car as STILL wasn't there when arrived & when it did it hadn't be cleaned, the engine management light was on & the mot & tax expired THAT DAY!! I said look this is becoming a joke now I've drove my car which was on it's last legs all this way and now the car that I was meant to be viewing with intentions of buying isn't even drivable! They said they would mot & tax it and valet it and I could have a company car for a few days until it was ready! I accepted that and they said I would have to pay for the ford focus then so I did! Took my receipt etc home with me and they gave me another FORD FOCUS as a company car.. It was on the red light when I got it, filthy inside and within 24hours of me having it would no longer start!!! I contacted them the next day livid as needed car for work & they just kept giving me excuses & said they would drop my ford focus too me as soon as was ready. Two days later after contacting th NUMEROUS times half the time being ignored by them and given numerous excuses as to why my car wasn't on its way when was promised by lunchtime! My car finally appeared and the driver spoke no English what so ever, I switched on the ignition and yet again ENGINE MANAGMENT LIGHT! I took all the paperwork off the driver and refused to hand over the remaining £100 they wanted for the car as car was not sold to me how I was promised! All they did was plug my car in and switch the fault light off hoping it wouldn't come back on unlucky for them 30miles down the road it did! I HAVENT HEARD FROM THEM SINCE AND IM IN THE PROCESS OF SENDING MY DOCUMENTS OFF FOR THE CAR SO WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF ITS EVEN LEGALLY THERES! Think I will be contacting the echo about this myself as I'm also another heavily pregnant customer that they have mistreated!

No, I concede - it's only 99% of the time, the other 1% is quibbling over minor geographical details on stories reporting on people who have walked out in front of trains. Your inability to control yourself overrides empathy and compassion.

'Your trying to miss lead I do not post on every single story.' No, only the ones where you think you can create a ridiculous tenuous link.

Even if I were, coming from the master that would be some compliment.

'Our government allows things like this to happen because they act in the same way, that makes it political.'

An incredibly ignorant and stupid comment, unscrupulous people exist under who ever is running the country.

Keep digging - I suspect you'll get to Australia before than anyone mentioned in this article.

I bought a car from them in September last year, I needed a small runaround just to get me back and forth from hospital where I was having cancer treatment. The car broke down after 2 weeks and it went back under the so called warranty. I haven't seen it since, Stan fobbed my husband and I off all the time I lost 6 months car tax and had to pay a penalty on the car insurance for cancelling it together with over £2000 for car purchase. With all the stress going on at the time I nearly went to pieces. When I came out of hospital I took it to Small Claims Court and they didn't bother to respond so I won the judgement. However it was more expense and although you can claim it back you have to get it back from these con men, and that is proving impossible to date. I am not wealthy and these men have caused me and mine a lot of worry and hardship!

My gut instinct was to run a mile from these shysters when my son spotted a car for sale by them - he persuaded me otherwise!! Sold with 1 year mot (non-existent), 1 year tax (it was in the post - never arrived) and 1 year warranty (not worth the paper it was written on). Numerous trips, phone calls and 6 weeks in the garage (2 of them said they would never do work for him again) and finally got the car back. Dreading the mot in July if I'm honest cos who knows what is lurking beneath the bonnet??? I would love to meet up with the charming Stan again and see if I can reduce him to a quivering wreck like I did last time - gutless coward!

Hi SAB208

If you would like to add your bad experience to the forum I posted in the last comment I would be grateful

I have spoken with the Echo and if we have enough complaints we may be able to take some form of legal action.

I have spoke to a solicitor about legal action but he said it would not be an easy task and there would be no guarantee I would win.

Hopefully with enough people and as a group we can sort something out.

Richard Burbage (fatboy) - liar, thief, conman, womaniser, egomaniac, thug, habitual failure, you've got to be smarter than that (ratface75, Munday1, Dave Spearing? - Ken Spearing (fb) will love that!) You're a big man now aren't you hiding behind the curtains in Botley (Slime Hall), leaving it to poor old Stan (wasn't Stan your 'driver' and 'b****' 10 years ago before you 'fled' to Bristol?) So you've spent all the millions you took from Oz - holidays, fast cars, fast women, Shar Pei's, Louis Vuitton, (you'll have to face that one soon) so you're on your backside now? How's Lorraine and the 3 kids Burbage, still putting up with you and your crap? Villa in Marbella? - ha, in your dreams! Teflon's wearing a bit thin, who you going to cry to now? World's getting smaller, who's going to get you first, the Australian Federal Police or the lynch mob which is growing by the day? Big big man Burbage - John Burbage would hang his head in shame
