A man has died in an accident on one of Southampton's busiest roads tonight.
The male pedestrian collided with a car on Bassett Avenue.
He was taken to Southampton General Hospital but pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.
The man, who has not been named, is aged 70 and from the Southampton area.
His family has been informed.
The driver of the Audi A3 car invovled in the accident was unhurt. He is a 23-year-old from Bournemouth.
The accident happened as the car drove north at about 4pm near the junction with Saxholm Way.
It closed the road for sometime causing major traffic chaos was motorists heading to and from the nearby M3.
The road has since reopened.
Driver Liam Thompson, 27, from Woolston, said he could see numerous police cars and at least two ambulances and other response vehicles at the scene .
He said diverted buses had become trapped between parked cars on the diversionary route and traffic was at a standstill.
Police have appealed for witnesses to contact the roads death investigation team on 101.
