Volunteers clear beach at Milford on Sea of wreckage from storm
1:23pm Tuesday 18th February 2014 in News
AN ARMY of volunteers helped clear a Hampshire beach today.
Around 50 residents picked up a variety of litter from Pennington Marsh and Lagoon, near Lymington, left over from the weekend's storms.
Dubbed Kate's Army after organiser Kate Collison, they cleared around a mile of coastline finding chairs, lobster pots and even polystyrene chunks.
Kate, 40, who grew up in Lymington, said: "I came down here on my bike on Saturday morning and the place looked a tip. So I put on Facebook I would be clearing it up and was looking for help and I would have been happy with just a couple of friends coming.
"The turn out has been fantastic and it was lovely to see lots of behind rein so we can pass the message to look after our environment."
Countryside rangers from the county council were also on site collecting around 50 bags of rubbish picked up at the site.
Other parts of the community also got involved including local cafés offering free drinks vouchers to those who took part.
