A MAJOR Hampshire road that has been closed for more than a week has been partially reopened.
Part of Greatbridge Road in Romsey is back in use for motorists, providing access to Budds Lane and its industrial estate.
Water levels have receded after the military implemented new defences, including a dam at nearby Fishlake Stream.
It means the entrance to Budds Lane is passable with care and two concrete bollards have been erected to reduce traffic speed.
The decision was made at an on-site multi-agency summit but the road remains closed south of the railway bridge due to its proximity to the dam.
Hampshire Police Acting Chief Inspector James Douglas said: “I am pleased to say that the water levels are much improved on parts of Budds Lane, although we will continue to keep a close eye on this as rain continues to ensure the roads and communities are kept safe.
“Together with our partner agencies, we have done everything we can to re-open part of this important road as swiftly as possible to allow access, and, hopefully, the start of a return to business as usual.”
A police officer has been onsite all day to provide reassurance and information to residents and workers.
