IT was like a scene from popular children’s cartoon Wacky Races.
Hundreds of children from a Hampshire school did their bit for the Sport Relief fundraising challenge.
The youngsters from Park Gate Primary School took to all manner of wheeled transport to do laps of their playground.
Pupils chased Olympic medallist and former World Championship 4x400m relay runner Iwan Thomas.
Iwan, along with more than 400 children, did three laps on scooters, roller blades, go-karts and bikes.
One pupil even took part on a uni-cycle before the second part of their challenge saw them run around their muddy field.
Iwan, who won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the 400m, World and European Championship 4x400m relay medals along with silver at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, said: “Sport Relief is very important. I said to the kids when I gave them an assembly that a pound to us isn’t very much but that amount each can make a huge difference to people’s lives.”
Head teacher Rebecca Kingsland said: “It’s been fantastic to have Iwan Thomas here. He gave them a great talk about his experiences and the children will respond to that, it’s great to hear his stories.”
