FOUR people have been taken to hospital following a head-on collision in a major Hampshire road.

Two people were cut free from a car and two sustained serious injuries in the crash between a White Renault Kangoo and an orange Nissan Note in Allbrook Way, Eastleigh, at around 12.15pm.

Daily Echo:

The road has been closed by police and will remain shut for the next few hours.

The Nissan was carrying an elderly couple who were trapped in the car and were freed after Hampshire Fire and Rescue and the ambulance service removed the roof.

One man was taken to Southampton General Hospital with serious chest and leg injuries along with a woman with minor injuries.

Two men in their 30s were in the Renault and were also taken to the General, one with serious head and chest injuries and the other with minor neck and back injuries.

Daily Echo: Police close Allbrook Way.

Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance was on the scene but all four patients were taken to hospital by road ambulance.

A third vehicle was involved in the incident but the female driver was assessed at the scene and was not taken to hospital.

Four road ambulances and a hazardous area response team are also currently on site at Allbrook Way, Eastleigh, with four people being treated.

Debris is still strewn in the road while police are conducting forensic examinations.

Temporary Sergeant Dan Golding, supervising police office on the scene, said: "For reasons to be determined these vehicles have collided head-on. Why that has happened we do not know.

"We are forensically examining the scene which is why the road has been closed and we have asked for any witnesses that we are not aware of to contact PC Mosely at Totton Roads Policing Unit."

Medical teams were on the scene for over an hour.

Two ambulance officers and two doctors were also present.
