REWARDS totalling £1,500 are being offered for information leading to the conviction of a hit-and-run driver who left a pregnant cow writhing in agony.

One of the rewards is being put up by the cow’s owner, who is seeking justice after the animal was badly injured by a BMW that sped off following the accident in the New Forest.

It follows an incident in another part of the Forest in which a pregnant donkey was also killed in a hit-and-run crash.

The cow, six-year-old Blackie, did not die instantly and had to be humanely destroyed by Mike Lovell, one of the New Forest Agisters.

Mr Lovell said: “The cow was still alive when I got there about 10-15 minutes after the collision.

“She was lying in the middle of the road and there was blood everywhere. It was one of the worst accidents I’ve ever been to.”

Blackie was on the Hill Top to Ipers Bridge road on Tuesday night when she was hit by a car thought to have been flouting the 40mph speed limit.

She was owned by New Forest Commoner Len Mansbridge, of Blackfield. His partner, who did not want to be named, said: “People who drive like that deserve to break their neck. And anyone who leaves an animal writhing in agony is beneath contempt.”

Sue Westwood, clerk to the Verderers, added: “Debris found at the scene indicates that a dark grey BMW was involved.

“A £500 reward is being offered by cow’s owner for information leading to the conviction of the driver. That’s in addition to the reward of up to £1,000 offered under the Verderers’ reward scheme.”

Anyone with information about either incident should call Miss Westwood on 023 8028 2052 or e-mail .

The police! who will either get in touch with the Agister or at least give you the details to do so.

It is a Road Traffic Collision why should you assume it's be any different from hitting a person or another car or anything else. It's an accident on the road...

I hope they catch them.

I saw a pony hit by a car once. Before I had a mobile phone, and didn't know the number anyway. I had to drive to teh agister's house and ask him to come out with his gun to put the poor animal down. (Its stomach had been ripped open.) The driver was lucky he wasn't killed because the pony broke the windscreen. He said "It come out of nowhere" but it hadn't. It had been standing still and HE was the one coming out of nowhere, at speed. I'd seen the animal on the road and saw the car coming - I flashed at the car, but obviously the driver took no notice, or wasn't looking where he was going. (I thought flashing, although it might have upset his vision, was the better option because he was obviously going to hit the pony if he carried on as he was going.)

All of a sudden we're expected to join PETA because you read a heavily-biased and ill-informed report in the Daily Mail this week? You do know that halal slaughters are not the only horrors humans carry out on animals, right?

How are you enjoying that chicken you're eating? Nice and cheap at a fiver from Tesco, right? Any idea what cruelties that was subjected to so you could stuff your face with it? Grab a pair of pliers, then rip one of your fingernails off. Now imagine someone doing that to a nail that was attached to your face. Nice, eh? This is basically what de-beaking is, and nearly all our poultry goes through it, long before they're basically ground up alive to make McNuggets. On the whole, I think standing idly in a field eating grass most of your life followed by a quick slit of the throat isn't all that bad in comparison.

While we're on the subject of the "pain and suffering" of that throat-slitting, did you know that our alternative, of "stunning" the animal before slaughter, is ineffective in about 23% of cases, causing just as much pain and suffering to the animal? Was that not mentioned in the thing you read? How about the fact that a clean throat-slit as per halal slaughter usually kills immediately?

Maybe let's not pretend we're suddenly all animal lovers, because you happened to get a hint that someone else was not, eh.

II wouldn't join PETA even if I only ate things straight off of wild plants(I enjoy meat too much for that), they inhumanely kill animals with easily treatable conditions like a broken leg or even mange or fleas.

Shameful. The car and speedy driving is obviously compensation for a lack of manhood, as he didn't have the balls to face the music for what he'd done. (Of course there's a lot of asumption in this comment. It could've been a woman driver for all we know).
I really hope they catch him and show his picture in the papers and on the news for all to see, and as a deterent or teaching excercise for anyone else who hits an animal in the forest.

Absolutely. My comment was a sarcastic joke at the sort of comments you get on here. Everyone makes assumptions on these things.

However, I seriously hope they catch the person responsible. There must have been some damage to the front of the car following this sort of collision. Surely it shouldn't be too tricky to contact garages and body shops in the area for this.

Maybe let's not pretend we're suddenly all animal lovers, because you happened to get a hint that someone else was not, eh.[/p]
II wouldn't join PETA even if I only ate things straight off of wild plants(I enjoy meat too much for that), they inhumanely kill animals with easily treatable conditions like a broken leg or even mange or fleas.[/p]
Well, quite. I didn't literally mean join PETA, more that we'd all become animal lovers spontaneously because of one ill-informed story. gilbertratchet

I really hope they catch him and show his picture in the papers and on the news for all to see, and as a deterent or teaching excercise for anyone else who hits an animal in the forest.
Yes! We must catch this illegal immigrant rapist child pornographer murdering thieving one-armed hump-backed gay driver immediately! Seriously, people, just how many assumptions do you need to make?
Someone has over reacted. Again.

Ah the old "I was being sarcastic" routine, used by morons everywhere to back-pedal out of something. Jesus.

I see the sympathy given for this cow. Where are all the comments about the many that are killed everyday for halal meat? They have throats slit and are in pain and suffering for minutes.

Nice, eh? I see lots of people jump on and off the animal lover band wagon... I was somewhat born on it and never got off.

And they say that for men, the bigger the car the smaller the manhood, and vice versa.
