TWO SOUTHAMPTON sisters are going nautical as they continue their mum’s legacy to make life better for youngsters fighting cancer.

Plans are well underway for the fifth annual spring ball in memory of Lesley Couzens, who lost her battle with cancer six years ago.

Ever since her death her daughters, Hazel Soffe and Jane Stapleton, have made it their mission to honour their mum’s last wish of supporting children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.

This year’s ball is set to be held on May 3 at Southampton Novotel.

When Lesley, 59, a senior lecturer in social work at Southampton Solent University, died in 2008 of cervical cancer, she left a note asking for any donations from her funeral to go towards the charity, but her daughters have taken that a step further.

It is hoped that this year’s nautical-themed glamorous ball, which offers guests a night of live entertainment, dinner and games, will smash through the £10,000 fundraising barrier.

Jane said: “One of mum’s final wishes was for donations to be made to CLIC Sargent.

During her battle with cancer she said it would be so much worse for children with the disease.

“Since then, we have made it our mission to raise as much as possible for this incredibly worthy cause.”

Hazel, from Nursling, added: “Guests at the events enjoy bubbly on arrival, a three-course meal, a grand raffle, auction, games and a disco. We all have a fantastic time – made even better by the knowledge that we’re helping such an important charity.”

The sisters are seeking local businesses to support the event by donating prizes or auction items.
