WORK has started on a £300,000 community centre in church grounds.
The building is on the side of the Church of the Holy Ascension in Hyde and has been funded by volunteers and grants.
Vicar Rev Jenny Alidina and her husband Naj have spearheaded the project.
The brick extension will be ‘green’, with an energy-efficient air-source heatpump heating system, up-to-date insulation and doubleglazed windows.
It will be accessible to people with disabilities and wheelchairs and pushchairs.
It will have a meeting room which can be divided into two, plus a kitchen and toilets. The upstairs will be set aside for young people but can also be used as a meeting room.
The centre will be available for the whole community to use as well as being home to Hyde Pre-school. It is hoped it will be completed by the end of the year.
The Veolia Environmental Trust gave £36,699 to the project through the Landfill Communities Fund.
Further grants came from Hampshire Community Buildings Fund, Grant Weston and from Rank.
