Part of Southampton docks has been sealed off following a bomb alert.

A large area near the container terminal has been evacuated following the discovery of a shell thought to date from the Second World War.

An area beside Dock Gate 20 was being covered with tarmac this morning when workmen unearthed the shell.

Police have ordered everyone off the site and set up a 100-metre exclusion zone while a military bomb disposal team deals with the device.

The green shell, about one-and-a-half metres below the surface, is likely to be blown up in a controlled explosion or taken away to be dealt with elsewhere.

A police spokesman said First Avenue was still open, despite the drama.

A witness said workmen were preparing to tarmac an area for a new business centre when the discovery was made.

“Police ordered everyone off the site, shut the gates and prevented anyone from going in,” he said.

Marchwood would of left it there as this area was used to get rid of old ordinance left over and other explosive stuff, before the Docks took over the reclaimed land.
And that is why i am not surprise that they found some thing like this there

Marchwood is the other side of the river. They used to dump their leftovers there.

Redbridge point was the spot where it use to all get dump and dispose off, I been present at 2 of the controlled explosions on the point, but this was before the docks container port was extended to include Redbridge point, Marchwood would send a team over 4 men to do the job, Where they do this job now I do not know, but never be surprise if live shells and other such devices are found in this area, Millbrook point use to be a firing Range for the volunteers before it became the isolation Hospital so from Millbrook point down to Redbridge point you are likely to find this sort of stuff laying around
