A DRUNKEN man who tried to head-butt police and was later found carrying a knife has been jailed.

Jason Daly lashed out at officers trying to arrest him outside a home in Southampton.

Now he is behind bars after being sentenced at Southampton Crown Court for resisting arrest and carrying a bladed article.

Daly, 39, of Millbrook Road, admitted the charges.

The court heard how police initially stopped him outside a home in Regents Park Road at 1.45am on August 31 of last year when they spotted a BMX left in the driveway.

Daly had emerged from a side gate claiming he had been urinating and looking for another bike in the garden.

Prosecutor Timothy Compton told the court how Daly had been drinking and “appeared to head-butt” officers when they tried to detain him.

Convictions Police later found a Stanley knife in a plastic bag secured to the BMX.

In mitigation, Daly claimed the knife was to cut a corn from his foot.

Defence counsel Unyime Compton said her client was homeless at the time and carried most of his possessions on the bike.

But Judge Peter Henry ruled that Daly – who has 22 previous convictions including four for battery – deserved a custodial sentence because he committed the offence while on licence.

Sentencing him to six months and 14 days behind bars, he said: “Carrying a knife or bladed article in a public place is of a serious nature.

“You were very drunk that night and you have previous convictions for violence and were on licence.”

Daly was ordered to pay a £100 victim surcharge.
