Around 15,000 people descended on Alresford, near Winchester, for the Watercress Festival, a free annual celebration of Hampshire’s iconic crops.

Now in its tenth year, the 2014 festival was made extra special thanks to a wedding procession through the crowded streets.

As previously reported, local bride-to-be Jenny Honiatt accidentally arranged her wedding on the same day and feared not being able to get out of the town.

But festival organisers came to her rescue by booking a swanky Rolls Royce to take her to the church on time.

Wendy Akers, one of the organisers, said: “It was a really lovely to see this vintage cream Rolls Royce driving through the streets and I think the locals enjoyed it because everyone loves a wedding.”

She added: “The festival was one of the most crowded events we have ever had.”

Meanwhile, the World Watercress Eating Championships was a big hit once again with 50-year-old David White (above) crowned this year’s champion after eating two 80g bags in one minute and 59 seconds.

Sarah French, who also helped organise the event, added: “It was his first time at the festival and it was a last-minute entry so he has done very well.

“It was a great day, the weather was wonderful and the car park was overflowing and there was such a great atmosphere.”

The festival was also raising money for the Joe Glover Trust but it is not yet known how much was raised.
