PEDESTRIANS and motorists alike could bare-ly believe their eyes last night as scores of cyclists stripped off for Southampton’s annual Naked Bike Ride.

Now in its eighth year, it attracted around 50 brave men and women looking to promote green travel and protest against the dangers faced by cyclists including poor road planning, bad driving and use of fossil fuels.

Daily Echo:

Some covered their modesty with bikinis and shorts but the majority were kitted out in their birthday suits as they rode a six-mile route around Southampton Common.

There were also creative attempts to obscure private parts using flamboyant hats, masks and body paint to draw the eye away.

And they received a good reception with onlookers reacting with good humour.

Dominic Crockford, 44, a computer software consultant of Winchester, said: “It’s all quite amusing and if people want to express themselves in this way I think it’s fine they do so.”Daily Echo:

The event proved very popular with the city’s Asian community with hundreds turning out to watch the riders, creating one of the biggest audiences the ride has ever had according to regulars.

This year’s event was a close-run thing, organised at just six weeks’ notice due to the usual co-ordinator taking part in a ride from Prague to Copenhagen.

But Ian Henden, organiser of the Portsmouth event, stepped in and said he was pleased with the turnout.

He said: “If you look around, you will see no airbrushed people but only ordinary human beings. There is nothing wrong with the human body. God created man naked; it was sinners who came up with clothes so we have nothing to be ashamed of.”

Yes , it's important that children should be protected from life in general but it's perfectly ok to stuff them to the gunnels with burgers, pizzas etc and make them into human waste machines...come on kids get it down you....

Kids laugh when they see nudity. Ergo it isnt to be feared in the way the "think of the children" brigade make out.

The differences between this well known protest ride and Goff are well documented. I would highly recommend the use of Google or else we'll suffer the same blimmin echo on here...

..perhaps thats why the paper is called the Echo? Repetition.

Authorities can't work it out. He was charged with outraging public decency in Banbury Magistrate lately, sent to Crown Court in custody. Weeks in custody and the charge is reduced to non imprisonable S5 and he's out.
If it makes your stomach bad to see, for example your mum and dad in the bath bigfella, maybe you should see a shrink.

Anyone who indoctrinates their child with irrational, unhealthy misconceptions about nudity is guilty of child abuse. Just because YOUR parents taught you (wrongly) that nudity is "disgusting" does not mean that todays parents should teach their children this, thus perpetuating the myth. It's not nudity per se that is wrong.... it is things like dozens of people being killed on our roads that is wrong. It is using oil and other resources without a care in the world that is wrong, because, as we have seen, when a country suffers a shortage, it seeks to grab the resource from other countries - by force if necessary.... what we call "war". Which kills many MORE innocent people.

Mugabe's still there (and Nigeria's a cr*phole along with Angola) because Uncle Sam's terrified of being seen as a colonialist in Africa. He "did" Liberia. It was a grotesque failure and that was it, so we were "warned off" over Suez and thus it has been ever since. The history of the Deep South-not oil-will explain the sensitivity over Africa. Libya was about Cameron trying for his "Falklands Moment". Well he's not Maggie and when he tried again over Syria he was quite rightly told to wind his neck in. Oil is indeed a scarce resource and some people enjoy exhibitionism,, and the world no worse a place for that, But you can't link them I'm afraid. I haven't read the CPS apologia for the NR, can't be bothered. An AP did mode of trial at Banbury and he is a very competent chap. I'm guessing High Command sent him all sorts of garbled messages that day.

The other reason w do it is due to the fact over the last 200 years with have progressed so fast that we are using all the fossil fuels we have on the earth due to this soon or later there will be none left. There was 88 of us this year and my self and group of people was handed out flyers in and around Southampton for over a week so lots of people was told about it in some cases me and my mates handed out over 1000 flyers a day just so people knew about it. I also like to comment on by saying if there is another in Southampton next year i will be there i will ride with them again and i will always support them i have to so this well done Southampton naked bike ride 2014 it was a blast.

This makes no sense at all and really shows how, without punctuation, we are but apes howling at each other. I'm sure it's all very worthy though and that its author does not "bunch up" with his chums to stop us driving by on our way to babysitting for grandchildren.

Bad idea - In order to make an arrest the offence must be something for which one can be arrested. So what offence do you have in mind?

If the CPS are uncertain then what makes you so sure?

OK here goes. He's easy to nick, doesn't do drugs or booze and kick off and 10 coppers needed to hold him down. So that's a good start. Secondly when the chav lady says my kid/ma bairn ortent ter be seein that" Chief Superintendent Noddy can say "well Ma'am we've dealt with this terrifying affront to the safety of your child, so you can relax and keep feeding him/her /it the Krispy Kremes"

Pretty fair assessment, Dai. Sad fact: many police officers are ignorant of the Law in this respect (and I use the word "ignorant" in it's proper way, not as a perjotatve word).. When they come across Steve Gough, they THINK (like many do) that what he is doing is illegal - so they arrest him. Then when they get him back to the police station and look at the law books, they find that what he is doing is NOT illegal... but to save face, they then try and find SOME aspect of what he is doing that might make it illegal. Hence all the ocassions when the charge gets reduced to Sec 5 Public Order Act - someone (posibly even an imaginary "someone" was seen to be offended. IF that goes to Court, the test is.... was that person who "was offended", REASONABLY offended? .... and a policeperson is supposed to have a thicker skin than an ordinary member of the public in this respect.

That is correct, a pretty good summary.
The 'offended' person can also be someone who was been invited to be offended against.
It is worth noting that this only applies in England and Wales. Scottish law is different, where a Police Officer can be the complainant AND the arresting officer.

I had the misfortune to see on the telly, rally car racing from Scotland a week or so ago. A car left the loose gravel road on a humpback bridge and ploughed into spectators, killing three of them. I found this most distressing and upsetting. Rally racing should be banned. Or mayne I should stay away from rally racing, and let those who enjoy it get on with it? Same with nudity. Don't like it? then don't look. (Best stay away from art galleries too, as there are loads of nude pictures there. And cancel "The Sun".

Most people over 17 years of age don't look great with their kit off actually. As a motorist I pay massively and the money is mostly used for welfarism not the roads I cycle on as a cyclist. I find the restraint of drivers in the Forest who crawl along for miles behind the bunched-up lycra numpty brigade absolutely heroic and far from "risky"

Mate you need to get yourself down to the track one day. "Most people" includes most people you see, which in a non-fitness environment is always gonna be higher.

Most people over 17 years of age that I see regularly would look pretty **** good with their kit off. I can vouch for a few of them thanks to alcohol!

"Most people over 17 years of age don't look great with their kit off"??!!!! So we at the crux of your argument. If all the riders were perfectly formed, air-brushed, come-hither, pouting beautiful girls, then that would be Alright Then. Well, you are flogging a dead horse. Quite apart from the fact that one won't FIND many of those in Southampton, the Naked Bike Ride is NOT a free strip show put on to satisfy those who are too mean to pay the entry fee for a lapdancing club! And I think you will find that finance for the roads comes out of general taxation, to which cyclists also contribute. From the VAT on their puncture repair kits upwards. And... not ALL cyclists are "lycra-clad louts". I don't (AFAIK) own a single stitch of lycra.

Believe me a week in the Pollentia Club Resort in Alcudia is long enough to let you know far more than you'd ever wish about the obsessive cycling brigade. And actually I couldn't care less about the exhibitionists and live miles from their "performance"

You realise that a bunch of cyclists is easier to pass than a group spread out along the highway?

I'm sure that if you think really hard, you can even work out why.

No, not my point. The obsessive ones deliberately bunch back and fore to make it hard for vehicles to overtake (one day they''ll try it on with an uninsured Chavmatic and may not like what happens). I've cycled amongst them, disguised as a harmless elderly person and seen them in action.
In similar disguise in Mallorca I've had the same types howling at me in Kraut and trying to force me into the traffic. There weren't one or two in the hotel camera man or whatever it's supposed to be, there were many dozen, arrogant, androgynous and devoid of any social graces. I'd prefer Cardiff City fans any day.

Since you clearly don't get it, here's an example, which is easier to pass, a 44 Tonne artic but compressed width ways or a van like a transit? Either way, you still have to use the other lane to overtake, even if the other lane is the oncoming lane, so which will you pass quicker? The long, thinned out truck or the normal sized transit?

You won't get past either in the Forest round Ipley and Beaulieu, but I've yet to see an artic with the ability to alter its morphology to thwart other road users.
Some of the people who turn out to howl at the Wiggle are fundamental orifices and some of the participants are too. Is that a fair summary?
