SIXTEEN people were rescued after a fire engulfed a block of flats in Hampshire.
The fire broke out in the stairwell of the first floor of Windsor House in Canal Walk in Landport, Portsmouth.
One person was rescued from the first floor, three were rescued from the second floor by ladder and two were rescued from the roof using an aerial ladder platform, and another ten were led to safety.
The fire broke out at 8.40pm last night and around 24 firefighters from Southsea and Cosham tackled the flames by using two hose reels, 10 breathing apparatus and positive pressure ventilation.
They battled the blaze for nearly three hours and it was eventually extinguished at 11.16pm.
One person was taken to hospital and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
