A STUDENT at a Hampshire university was killed by the toxic effects of a legal high substance, a coroner has ruled.

David Daniels had been studying at Winchester University when he was found dead having taken large amounts of Kratom.

It is thought to be the first time in the UK that the substance has been named as the sole contributor to someone’s death.

The substance, which is from a tree grown in South East Asia, is currently legal to buy in the UK and Mr Daniels’ death has sparked calls for the Government to take action.

The inquest in Southampton heard Mr Daniels, an American, had lived in New York with his girlfriend, who was originally from Hampshire.

He had decided he wanted to study sports science at Winchester in order to set up a psychiatry and physiotherapy business with his partner.

But on moving to the UK last summer they split up, and the 41-year-old then lived on his own at a flat in Marston Gate while studying at the university and working at a gym.

In October, Home Office officials started to investigate Mr Daniels over the documents he had used to get a place at Winchester.

They found he had forged a reference and personal training certificate, and he was arrested as police were also looking into allegations that he had stolen items from his former girlfriend. He was questioned at Winchester Police Station on October 15, and although the theft investigation was dropped he was informed that he would be deported back to the USA two weeks later.

Shortly after 5.30pm on October 21 police were called to his home after concerns over his welfare were raised, and officers forced entry to his flat after spotting his body lying on the kitchen floor through the window.

He was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics.

The inquest heard Mr Daniels had used Kratom for several years, and toxicology consultant Peter Street said Mr Daniels had high levels of the substance in his blood.

He then said: “I do think it is something that the Government has got to pick up on soon.”

He said there were at least ten other substances in his blood, including anti-depressants and anti-epileptic medication.

But coroner Graham Short returned a verdict that Mr Daniels had died as a result purely of the combined toxic effects of the two chemicals contained in Kratom; mitragynine and 7 hydroxymitragynine.

He said: “I consider it my view that David took the drug recreationally and regularly, and that he either consumed too much over a period of time which led to a critical level of this particular drug being in his body, or that the quality of the Kratom was different and therefore he underestimated its effects.”

When asked if the Government was considering banning Kratom, Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker told the Daily Echo: “The Government is determined to clamp down on the reckless trade in so-called legal highs, which has tragically claimed the lives of far too many young people in our country.

“We have permanently banned 350 substances previously sold as legal highs, mainly thanks to our use of generic legislation.

“I have also appointed an expert panel with the best brains in the country to look at how we can combat this dangerous trade. They are making good progress and will report to me shortly.”

WHAT IS KRATOM?

Kratom, or mitragyne speciosa, is a tree found in south-east Asia.

It has been traditionally used as a narcotic by people in the region, who chew it.

It is available in the UK over the Internet as a powder, which can then be mixed with drinks such as fruit juices.

Possible side-effects can include nausea, constipation, erectile dysfunction and insomnia.

It is currently illegal in Thailand and Malaysia – despite the trees growing there – and while it is not illegal in the USA, some states have put forward plans to ban it.

Unfortunately this story is little more than sensationalist yellow journalism. Further, the coroner in this case, is ignoring a mountain of academic study which very clearly proves that the plant Mitragyna Speciosa ( aka Kratom) is NON TOXIC. Anyone with an ounce of inclination could quite easily search through the decades of studies on this plant, and learn that it has been used by humans for thousands of years without a single fatality. There IS no toxic level of the constituents in this plants chemical makeup. You ( dear reader) could start at Wikipedia, and check the footnotes there, to locate many primary sources of research which disprove this coroners assertions.

Demonizing natural alternatives to BIG PHARMA's toxic menu of chemicals has been the whore work of pathetic "journalists" for decades. Shame on this author for carrying on this sordid tradition.

Kratom is illegal in Thailand, because it very effectively interfered with that country's lucrative opium trade during the middle of the past century. There is a very strong opposition to the continuance of that ban in Thailand within the Thai government, because they no longer overtly profit from opium, and almost everyone there, is aware that Kratom could save the lives of many addicts, and safely treat many ailments.
Kratom is a NON TOXIC, highly effective, safe , natural PLANT, which has NEVER killed anyone, and saved the lives of many people.

Muck? You really should do your research before commenting. If you did your research, you would know that this "muck" is a natural plant that has saved thousands of lives. This article is just another cover up for the pharmaceutical industry and anyone with any type of common sense would see that just by reading it...

Kratom is a natural and safe botanical with thousands of years of safe usage. However, the coroner, and the uninformed reporter, have conveniently ignored the pharmaceutical cocktail the deceased was taking with a pre-existing epileptic condition. Stating that kratom caused this death, while ignoring the 9 other substances this person is on, is like saying someone who died in a plane crash was killed from a peanut allergy.

"He said there were at least ten other substances in his blood, including anti-depressants and anti-epileptic medication.

But coroner Graham Short returned a verdict that Mr Daniels had died as a result purely of the combined toxic effects of the two chemicals contained in Kratom; mitragynine and 7 hydroxymitragynine."

Wow, it could never be any of those 9 other things? ;-) Hmmm...someone doesn't want to upset the current science of big pharma. That's funny that there have been multiple studies of this incredible substance, including it's benefits for battling addiction, lowering blood pressure, vanquishing cancer, and alleviating pain. However, because it's not an 'approved' pharmaceutical then we better blame on the 'herbs'. How about the irresponsible drugging of doctors, and someone's negligence and poly substance usage. I am willing to bet there were other actions in these SSRI antidepressants, combined with effects of the epileptic medications. Not to mention that they were probably using an extracted potent version. This is why education is key.

This sort of thing wouldn't happen if we were open about herbs and medications, rather than hiding from the draconian rulings and laws that prevents herbalists from talking about herbs openly without fear from the prosecution of making claims. For more information on this in the EU, and the UK, please look up the "UN: codex alimentarius".

It's this one-sided journalism that will prevent people who use kratom responsibly and medicinally, from obtaining it. Please do your research folks, and make your own decisions. This article only presents one of a few extreme edge cases resulting from irresponsible use, and mixing of drugs.

The old trustworthy drugs should have been made legal. Miles more powerful and safer. I personally found Kratom very weak and not worth the bother and would rather have eaten a load of cannabis, amphetamines or ecstasy which have all been tried and tested and can all be made safer by making them in a proper pharamceutical factory.. Banning the older drugs has just made lots of people 'scrape the bottom of the barrel' buying all sorts of herbal remedies of varying and sometimes quite horrible effects. And the wave of unreseacrhed research chemicals, sold as 'legal highs' just because they have only just been designed which could be doing any old thing to peoples brains.

The problem with this report is when you google kratom, this article is on the first page, which means thousands of people would have had to web search this article by name, and seeing as though this page is a third rate , low class news app, i highly doubt it. So a more likely scenerio is that someone from pharma, or the fda, submited the article, and paid money to get the ranking upped in the web search. Another words its a hoax.

This is a sorry excuse for journalism. I am a medical student currently doing a research project on the efficacy of kratom for safely alleviating chronic pain, and I find this article to be an absolute joke. I have read nearly every publication ever written about kratom and EVERY SINGLE RESEARCH ARTICLE DEEMS KRATOM AS NON-TOXIC. Additionally, kratom and it's main alkaloids (mitragynine and 7-OH-mitragynine) do NOT raise ALT/AST levels (liver enzymes), meaning that it does not adversely affect the liver whatsoever. I have drank kratom on numerous occasions (with many of the physicians in my research department) and we have all concluded first-hand that other than some mild mood-elevation and stimulation, kratom does not have any significant mood-altering or psychotropic effects. The strength of it's effects are nearly identical to coffee except instead of feeling jittery energy, you feel a more relaxed stimulation. Regardless, kratom does not in any way impede cognition or inhibit one's ability to function. Kratom is certainly not something that gets you "high" unless you consider coffee to be something that gets you high as well.

On a historical note...kratom is not some designer drug or "legal high" that just popped up out of nowhere. It's a plant that has been around for millions of years and has been used as a medicinal remedy for centuries. Additionally, there is NOT ONE CASE of a kratom-related overdose. Sure, there are cases of someone taking 10 or more pharmaceutical medications, and also having kratom in their system at the time of overdose...but CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION. No coroner would ever submit a report ruling the cause of death to be an herbal remedy when there are 10 or more PHARMACEUTICAL DRUGS in the patient's system.

This article should be retracted, and the Daily Echo editors should be ashamed of themselves.

DeltriceSmith

yearight says...

nevermind all the other drugs he was on.
nnnooooo....it's conclusive that it was the kratom.

by the way, do some research about how many
people die every year from peanut butter related allergies.
it only makes sense to me that peanut butter
should be illegal or at least regulated by prescription.
