PUPILS are celebrating after their school was recognised for its commitment to sport.

Norwood Primary School, in Eastleigh, has been awarded a Gold Kite Award from the Sainsbury’s Games, run in conjunction with the Youth Sports Trust, despite having no playing fields.

The school, in Chamberlayne Road, has worked its way up from Bronze three years ago.

It has organised more competitive events, such as cross-country, netball and rugby, with other local schools, encouraged children to get healthy by wearing a pedometer for a week, and has an annual sports awards ceremony.

Sue Curtis, PE co-ordinator, said that the school has also increased participation in after-school sports clubs by providing them free of charge thanks to Government funding, so now 150 out of the 200 pupils take part.
