FIREFIGHTERS this morning dampened down grassland in Hampshire following a blaze.

Crews returned to Chestnut Avenue, Eastleigh, at 7.25am to tackle smouldering grass.

It followed a fire breaking out there at 3.38pm yesterday in a secluded area away from homes.

Crews from Eastleigh initially spent nearly five hours dealing with the fire before returning again this morning.

It is not yet known how it started but is thought the parched peat soils caught fire in the heat.

It follows crews tackling more than 40 fires across Hampshire over the weekend leaving large areas of common land wiped out.

Several hundred square metres of heath land were destroyed in the fire when a blaze broke out at Netley Common just off Kanes Hill at 7.30pm on Sunday.
