SHE IS always going above and beyond to help the elderly in her community.
That’s why Carol Green is the latest nomination for the Daily Echo’s Community Star campaign.
She has spent the past three years volunteering at the Age Concern Hampshire’s Horrill Wellbeing Centre in Dibden Purlieu and is a familiar friendly face for everyone that visits.
The 68-year-old from Southampton is devoted to the people she looks after and staff feel she is a true unsung hero.
Since joining the team Carol has kept herself busy by looking after the centre’s garden and always makes sure it is in full bloom for everyone to enjoy – particularly in the summer months.
And this year her green fingers have produced strawberries which were very popular during Wimbledon and visitors are still enjoying them with cream as a special treat.
In her spare time, Carol even likes to join in with the centre’s activities and has become a regular at the t’ai chi classes every week.
Assistant manager at the centre, Teresa Blakey said: “Carol always has a smile on her face and helps older people at the centre, she always steps in to help at fundraising events and nothing is too much trouble for her.
“She has always loved her gardening and she is such a lovely lady, I think she will be thrilled that people are nominating her for the award.”
The Community Star campaign, in association with affordable housing company Aster, will run until Friday, August 22, when Daily Echo editor-in-chief Ian Murray, Aster’s regional director Jean Dalziel and their customer board member John Cockaday will choose the winners.
First place will receive £500 and £250 to a charity of their choice, second place will be given £250 and £100 to charity, then six highly commended nominations will be given £100 and £50 to charity.
A Community Star can be any member of the public who goes above and beyond to serve their community.
