THE grave of an 11-month-old boy has been desecrated by thieves just days after his death.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the grave at St Mary Extra Cemetery in Portsmouth Road, Southampton, was raided.

Two solar lamps were taken and damage was caused to small teddy bears and other items left in memory of the boy, who died of a rare terminal disease in July.

His family are upset and distressed and his mother said: “He was a very loved and well known little boy by people all over Southampton and other places. I can't understand why somebody would do this to his grave as they can quite clearly see it is a baby’s grave. I am upset to think that anybody could do this.

“Whoever is responsible has done this for no reason, as there is no money to be made from these solar lights. All they have done is upset me and my family and ruined a baby’s grave, it's disgusting."

The incident occurred between noon on Monday, July 28 and 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 30.

Anyone with information should contact PC Mark Hawley at Bitterne Police Station on 101 quoting 44140273776, via hampshire.police.uk/internet/do-it-online/online-forms/message-for-officer.html or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Wow, what an absolutely scummy and overall terrible thing to do. Child loss is extremely difficult and you would hope their place of rest would be peaceful.

A child's resting place who never experienced a very long life, destroyed by people who are destroying their own lives as well as others. I hope as soon as they find the people responsible they make it known to the public, so everyone knows what vile people they are.

well said kiz.bartlett, even the deceased cant rest in peace. It's bad enough losing a child but then to find the grave desecrated is beyond disgusting, how awful for the parents

How low can a person go? This sort of act is surely the most despicable & horrible act. Do the people who commit these appalling acts of desecration have no self esteem or consideration for the grief of the family of this poor child?
it seems to me that the UK today have become a nation of people only concerned about self. I despair

Whoever you are that did this you are the lowest scum of the earth for stealing from a dead baby's grave. And you destroyed the grave just to steal solar lamps, i hope people that know you tell the police and you then have your name and face plastered all over the town you live in. You don't deserve to hide your identity after the hurt and further angst you caused the family. Was stealing solar lamps worth destroying a child's grave who you most likely didn't know?

This is deplorable, and I hope the cowards responsible are quickly apprehended and dealt with by the police and courts.
One way to catch them in the act might be for SCC to use some of their hidden surveillance cameras they have used to watch for fly-tippers, as long as they are installed somewhere where they are not easily spotted.
I am however unsure whether SCC bereavement services dept. would decide if this would infringe privacy regulations or not.

It is so sad to lose a child of that age.

However, this type of desecration happens all too frequently - the Echo has reported several such despicable incidents.

That said, perhaps it would be best not to leave toys and lights on graves - they will have to be removed one day.

Even animals - and I use the term in the real sense - could be responsible for some of the desecrations if they have been attracted by the lights.

Unfortunately it's not as easy as just not putting anything down. They will never know who their daughter would become, to see them grow up. All too often, this is a symbol that they are still connected to their daughter and gives the family a way of grieving. I know that the majority of families who lose children for whatever reason will decorate their grave like this.
