UNIVERSITY teams from three continents battled it out for underwater supremacy.
They gathered to race human-powered submarines for the second biennial European International Submarine Races in Hampshire.
The week-long event, at QinetiQ’s Ocean Basin in Gosport, was designed to test students’ engineering skills.
Every submarine involved was designed and built by the university, but the contest also tested sporting ability and stamina.
Teams raced against the clock with the pilot wearing diving gear and pedalling underwater around a slalom course.
They included, from the UK, the University of Southampton, University of Bath, University of Plymouth and University of Warwick, but also from Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the USA.
The overall winner was Omer 9, from École de Technologies Supérieure Montreal, in Canada, winning for the second time.
