A SOUTHAMPTON pub at the centre of a battle by campaigners to prevent it becoming a fast food restaurant has held a family fun day.

The Bittern was raising money for the chemotherapy ward at Southampton General Hospital.

Entertainment included music, face painting and a bouncy castle. The event raised more than £1,500.

Landlord Glen McInnes said: “It was a brilliant day and everyone enjoyed the last bit of sunshine. It was great to have all the support of our locals and to see everyone having fun for such an important cause.”

The event comes just days after the Daily Echo told how campaigners face a further fight to save the historic pub.

Proposals to turn the venue into a McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru had been thrown out by planners at Southampton City Council. But the restaurant giant has lodged an appeal, which will mean a public inquiry.

McDonalds RESTAURANTS Ltd are a global giant and a fundraiser providing £1500 towards a pub staying open will not stop them from opening another site if they really want to.

Sad but true. ££££ is more important than voices of locals. It's not a popular opinion - actually its not an opinion its a business fact.

It'll be like the Totton McDs on the old Red Lion site saga. Why the need for one when there is a McDs over at Hedge End? There are plenty of food outlets on Bitterne Rd E/ Thornhill Park Rd so why the need for McDs? Just pure greed on their behalf and if goes ahead, just further perpetuates the obesity problem this country is having to deal with, at tax payers expense (like mine). I know, before anyone then says, its down to choice about what you eat but it seems that there appears to be a lot of ignorance in this country as to what is healthy to eat and what to eat in moderation. I dont eat McDs etc but I do have fish and chips but not on a regular basis, basically cant afford to and even if I could I wouldnt. I'd rather see the pub saved as so many are closing in this country and why is that because of big corporate companies like McDs and Tescos of this world putting pressure on to have more and more of them in our cities. People will rebel in the end when they realise that there is more to shopping at one store and eating food generally not healthy for them.
