DETECTIVES will this morning return to court to ask for more time to quiz a man on suspicion of murdering mum-of-five Pennie Davis.

The 36-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday night in Southampton over the stabbing of 47-year-old.

Last night Hampshire Police confirmed they had been given a further 12 hours to question him. That time limit expires this morning but police leading the murder probe want more time to question him and will ask a judge to grant that this morning.

Yesterday police confirmed that a woman arrested in connection with the incident had been charged with assisting an offender and intending to pervert the course of justice.

Leanne Doyle, 24, of Beech Crescent, Hythe, appeared at Winchester Crown Court and was granted bail until October 1.

She was charged on Monday but the DailyEcho was unable to report this after Hampshire police and the Crown Prosecution Service applied for an order under Section 4 of the Contempt of Court Act. These restrictions were lifted yesterday.

As previously reported, Pennie’s husband, Pete, found her body on September 2 at the paddock by Leygreen Farm, where she had been tending to her four horses.

The arrest of the second suspect came after several days of heightened police activity around the Waterside area, close to where Pennie lived and worked in Blackfield.

Armed officers carried out several searches at locations around Hythe and Hardley, whilst stop checks were carried out on vehicles on main roads.

Detective Superintendent Paul Barton said: “I said early on, and I would like to say again today, that there has never been any suggestion of a direct risk to the wider community.

“I appreciate that our enquiries have also been a cause for concern and I would like to thank everyone affected for their understanding while we continue to investigate this|brutal murder with minimal disruption to day-to-day life.

“I’ve been massively encouraged by the number of people who’ve come forward with information.

“During our anniversary appeal work (on Tuesday) we spoke to the occupants of around 960 vehicles, which has been incredibly useful.

“I’m asking anyone with information, who has not already done so, to get in touch. You may think what you saw or heard was insignificant but it could be important to our enquiries and our efforts to secure justice for Pennie and her family.”

A 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been bailed until November 3 and a 37-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender was bailed until October 23.
