Bosses of a Hampshire care home have been ordered to make urgent improvements after a damning inspection revealed a catalogue of failings.

Sunrise of Bassett Care Home in Southampton must boost standards in six areas of residents’ care after the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published their findings.

The report found:

  • Some residents with wounds had not had them redressed as required;
  • No record of a valve being changed in a resident’s catheter over a period of just under two months;
  • Call bells were not always responded in a timely way, with some taking in excess of 15 minutes;
  • Senior staff members were unaware mental health legislation could be used in some challenging situations with residents;
  • People were left sitting in wheelchairs that did not meet their needs.

CQC inspectors swooped on the home in June this year which is run by Sunrise Senior Living, to compile a report stating what action will be taken to meet the essential standards.

The organisation says it has since worked closely with the CQC to ensure high standards of care in the future.

The care home provides accommodation for up to 104 people who require personal or nursing care, and provides a service for older people who may have dementia.

According to the report, people living at the home were not always receiving the nursing and personal care required, while some individual care plans lacked details as to how their needs should be met.

The report revealed people were at risk of “receiving inadequate nutrition and hydration as they did not receive the support required”.

The report also found people were not sitting in appropriate chairs at lunch tables, which could increase the risk of choking, and some call bells were answered in 15 minutes.

But the CQC found the care home met the required standard in cleanliness and infection control, and the safety and suitability of premises.

On its website, the firm claims the home as a ranking of 8.9 out of 10 at care home ratings website carehome.co.uk, and describes itself as offering “personalised, individually tailored nursing care, residential care, and assisted living services to Southampton and the surrounding area”.

Among its events is a memory cafe for people living with dementia and memory loss, a gardening club, a coffee morning, scrabble, a gentlemen’s club, and a crafts workshop.

A spokesman at Sunrise of Bassett said its residents’ health and wellbeing is “always our number one priority” and some points raised in the report were “addressed immediately”.

They added: “This report is based on an inspection that took place in June and does not reflect the excellent progress made since then.

“We have been working closely with the CQC to help ensure we provide the high standards of care our residents deserve.

“Several points raised at the time of the inspection were addressed immediately. In addition, we are submitting a robust action plan with steps we are taking to make further improvements.

“We look forward to demonstrating that these measures have effectively addressed their concerns when they next inspect the community and are confident of meeting or exceeding the standards in all areas of compliance.”
