IT’S official. Guinness World Records has confirmed that a bid to create the largest ever ukulele ensemble has smashed all records.

Organised by the county council’s Hampshire Music Hub 2,370 ukulele players converged on St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton for what was a world first.

Ever since the participants have been anxiously waiting for the record to be officially confirmed.

Players of all ages took part, helping to beat the previous record of 2,134 participants in a ukulele ensemble in Japan in 2012.

One of those strumming the mini instruments was county council chairman Councillor Colin Davidovitz.

He said: “I would really like to congratulate all the hundreds of young people, who, with their parents, teachers and friends, took part at this world record- breaking event.

“It would not have happened without the leadership, help and support of the county council’s highly regarded music service led by its head Jill Larner. It gave the opportunity for the thousands of young people from all over the county, who love listening to music, to come together on a great occasion to make it for themselves.

“For many, I am sure, this could be the start of a rewarding career in the music industry.”

Jill Larner added: “I am absolutely thrilled that Guinness World Records has officially recognised our efforts and I am immensely grateful to everyone that took part.

“It was a day to remember and I would like to congratulate all those who helped to make this possible and made our vision to set a new world record a reality.”
