INVESTIGATIONS are continuing after a convenience store was targeted by arsonists.

The Tesco Express store in Cobden Avenue, Bitterne Park, remained closed for most of yesterday after a suspected arson attack in the early hours of the morning.

As reported yesterday by the Daily Echo, the blaze took hold in the refuse area at the back of the building at around 5am but failed to spread to the store.

A total of 12 firefighters from St Mary’s and Hightown fire stations were called to the scene after reports of flames rising from a lean-to area at the rear of the store.

Firefighters said the flames could be seen rising from the building from the nearby Cobden Bridge.

Customers were seen driving in to the store car park during the busy rush hour period to be greeted by a hand-written sign hanging on the entrance door informing them of the incident.

A police officer stood guard by a cordon blocking off the refuse area throughout the day.

The fencing around the bin area was scorched by flames and a strong smell of burning lingered in the area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but a spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was a suspected arson.

No one was in the building at the time the blaze took hold.

A resident from nearby Cobden Court said he called the fire service after noticing the flames from his window.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: “I got up and saw an orange light through the curtain.

“I thought it was the bin men but when I looked out I saw flames. I could see them over the hedge but I couldn’t see much.

“The fire brigade were very prompt in getting here.

“I haven’t seen anything like this before round here and it is not what you expect to see on a Monday morning.”

Another Cobden Court resident said: “I heard a commotion but nothing like a fire.

“It’s quite surprising and scary.

“I hope they catch the people who did it.”

Firefighters used one hose reel, one jet, and two breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.

A spokesman for Tesco thanked its customers for their patience during the store closure and confirmed the matter is in the hands of the police.

They added the back fence to the store was set alight and there was no damage to the shop.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary confirmed the fire was under investigation.
