AN AUDIENCE of thousands was delighted by a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the sky above Southampton tonight.

Bad weather failed to put off the crowds who flocked to the Daily Echo-backed event in Mayflower Park.

This year’s theme was the Big Bang, and the award-winning Pyrotex Fireworks did not disappoint as they served up a breathtaking display along Southampton’s waterfront.

Hundreds of fireworks were fired from a barge on the River Test into the sky over Mayflower Park in a display that could be seen for miles around.

And the crowds weren’t only delighted by the fireworks, as they were entertained throughout the day and evening by a host of musical acts on the Wave 105 stage.

Daily Echo:

There was also a funfair that took place throughout the afternoon and evening, with between 10,000 and 15,000 people expected to attend the event, while another 8,000 was expected to watch the display from outside Mayflower Park.

Money raised at the event, which is organised by Southampton Round Table No 4, will be shared out between local charities.

*Meanwhile, Winchester hosted its 56th annual bonfire and fireworks evening which saw dozens of brightly-coloured fireworks explode over the city’s skyline.

The evening got off to a flying start, with families lining up along The Broadway for the torch-lit procession up to the recreation ground.

The Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Eileen Berry, lit the bonfire at River Park, which was shortly followed by the sound of 'oohs', 'aahs', and an almighty bang.

Last year the event raised over £40,000 for local causes, and organisers Winchester Round Table hope tonight’s event did the same.
