A Hampshire man has been locked up for assaulting police officers in what a judge described as a “horrendous” attack.

Kyle Butler pleaded guilty to charges of affray and assaulting a police officer.

At Winchester Crown Court Judge Keith Cutler, jailed him for 20 months for assaulting a policing officer, breach of a suspended sentence order and affray.

The 20-year-old, of Fylingdales Close, Basingstoke, was also ordered to pay £200 compensation to two of the police officers involved.

It happened when two officers were assaulted during an incident which happened in the early hours of in August when they were responding to an emergency call at a house in Fylingdales Close.

Two female response officers from Basingstoke arrived and tried to reason with Butler, who was out in the street waving his arms and threatening violence.

When the officers attempted to handcuff him, he became extremely irate and attacked both officers using the handcuffs.

He was then finally detained by another male officer.

Butler was also sentenced for a previous incident where he assaulted a male police officer.

Chief Inspector Simon Dodds said: “Across the country, police officers work extremely hard to keep their local communities safe. They come to work knowing that their job has an element of risk, as part of their duty to protect the public.

“However assaulting an officer must never be seen as just part of the job. It is unacceptable, and I am pleased that the courts have recognised the seriousness of this offence.

“All three officers have recovered and are back on full duties, which is to their credit.”

John Apter, chairman of the Hampshire Police Federation said: “I am pleased to see the courts have treated this matter with the seriousness it deserved.

“ Policing is dangerous and demanding, but being assaulted must never be acceptable or considered as just part of the job.”
