A MAN was left with a broken wrist after being hit with a walking stick as a brawl broke out in a Hampshire supermarket.

Goods were hurled down the aisles at Asda’s Totton branch as security guards struggled to break up the fight.

Southampton Crown Court heard how there was already bad feeling between Walter Smith and the victim, Beuno Pembridge.

Smith was called to the store by a teenage friend of his, who spotted Mr Pembridge shopping.

The court heard how trouble flared last Christmas Eve when Smith arrived with two other friends, twin brothers Jody and Freddie Hughes.

Initially security guards managed to keep the warring parties apart by trying to guide them towards the exit.

Prosecutor Daniel Sawyer said Smith then left but later came back, punching Mr Pembridge before he was pulled away.

Smith then grabbed a walking stick and attacked Mr Pembridge who suffered a fractured wrist.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, then picked up a box of speakers and also hurled it at Mr Pembridge, the court heard.

The incident appeared to be finished but then a friend of the victim walked over and made a remark as the group was leaving – sparking a second round of violence.

The brothers, who had been acting as peacemakers up to that point, then became involved in the brawl before the episode finally ended.

Smith, 26, of Pundel Green, Cadnam, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and was jailed for three-and-a-half years.

The 19-year-old brothers from Marchwood Road, Totton, received nine-month suspended sentences with a six-month curfew after admitting affray.

Jody Hughes was also placed on supervision for 12 months and Freddie Hughes was handed a 12-hour attendance centre sentence.

Sentence on the youth, who also admitted affray, was adjourned until next month.
